Keep in mind that if you are not using free Wi-Fi, you will use data on your mobile plan.

International rates through VoIP are much cheaper than through cellular networks. Like all mobile VoIP, iPhone VoIP is great for international calling. IPhone VoIP apps are cheap or free to download, and you can make calls on an iPhone VoIP app for little to no extra charge. If you already have VoIP home phone service, you can probably get an iPhone app for VoIP to extend your service. VoIP providers may supply an iPhone app with their service plans, or they may only offer service with their app, essentially a softphone. VoIP on the iPhone can be accomplished in many ways, and there are so many VoIP providers that offer iPhone VoIP apps that it's difficult to list them all here. With the freedom of VoIP and the flexibility of a smartphone, mobile communications is no longer tied down by your cell phone company. And, of course, there are laptops, netbooks, iPads, etc.IPhone VoIP is now a broad term with many options for the consumer.

If you have an old iPod Touch collecting dust, for example, you can download KakaoTalk or any other similar app and text for free (or call if you have a cheap headset with mic). BTW, you don't even need to have a phone to use a lot of these tools. There are other apps and other tools.many have already been mentioned. Mostly, I'll use KakaoTalk for free voice/text or Skype for free video over Wi-Fi. Depending on the situation, I'll use my world phone for limited incoming and outgoing voice calls and texts. There are so many good communication tools available now, you sort of need to determine your needs and then use whichever tools fit the need. Check with your carrier, and see what type of world phones they have. Having said that, the 4S and new iPhone 5 are world phones, but earlier versions (including 4) are not.

Many devices with Android can do this, and you can get many of them for free.

You just need a phone that functions on both GSM and CDMA networks. You don't have to switch to an iPhone to have an international phone. I'm also going to check out Micael's suggested app - Kakao. Other traveling companions used the Viber app for free texting and communication but I didn't get a chance to use it.

I am usually one who goes offline on trips but it was very nice to have my my 4s on this trip. Another friend just left her phone in airplane mode and just used wifi, but i did not because i needed to be available in case of any urgent issues at home. The process of turning on and off data was a bit of a hassle but with iOS6 it's not buried in the settings anymore and easier to update. I turned off cellular and data roaming most of the time and just turned it on when I wanted to look something up but didn't have access to wifi. I did purchase a small overseas data plan ( I have AT&T) for $30 and used it quite a bit without going over my data allocation. Most of the time I used wifi with no issues. Joe - I just returned from Turkey and London - used my 4s throughout the trip for email, directions, site information, airline checkin, etc. May I hear from anyone on how best to communicate while overseas? The answer might lie in just using emails while having access to wi-fi and to use my International $25 add on Verizon package sparingly so I don't incur more charges? May I hear from someone out there with some experience using Iphone 4S? Thanks But will this work in Rome for example? I plan to get with Verizon an International Plan that I will use for emails and will use wi-fi whenever possible. A buddy who flies down to mexico for United told me he used free imessaging to communicate with his wife in Houston while in Southern Mexico. Is this safe? :-) Also I am wondering if my Imessage will work if I have access to wifi? Could I send free I-messages this way back and forth with no text message charges? I realize if it did not go thru it might be sent as a text message which would then incur a charge. From what I have read with pickpockets and thieves roaming around in Rome and elsewhere I wonder about using my Iphone 4S too frequently.
